My God is bigger than your god

I turned on the radio and heard a popular preacher the other day. This preacher’s sermons used to thrill my soul; now, I confess that I did not listen to him for more than thirty seconds so it is possible that he may have thrilled my soul again. The pastor said “that the only way God could thwart Satan’s power was to raise Jesus from the dead.” I guess on the surface that could be accepted as true; but then I started thinking about my God, the God of the Bible; The God of Isaiah 40.

Lift up your voice mightily, O Jerusalem, bearer of good news; Lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” Behold, the Lord GOD will come with might, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him and His recompense before Him. Who has measured the waters of the earth in the hollow of His Hand, and marked off the heavens by the span, and calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, and weighed the mountains in a balance and the hills in a pair of scales? Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD or as His counselor has informed Him? With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge and informed Him of the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket and are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales; all the nations are as nothing before Him, they are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless…. Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you form the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is HE who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers. Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. He it is who reduces rulers to nothing, Who makes the judges of the earth meaningless. Scarcely have they been planted, Scarcely have they been sown, Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, But He merely blows on them, and they wither, And the storm carries them away like stubble. “To whom then will you liken Me That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable.

So what’s my point? I don’t think any of us would want a face to face with Satan. But we are not to fear him. And as far as worrying about his power, we shouldn’t. The only power he has is the power that God grants him, we learn this from Job. Satan is a creature, and we learn the relationship between God and his creatures in Isaiah 40. He is far above them. His ways and power are unfathomable! Or was Satan the one in this passage that taught God and gave him understanding? The answer to that is an obvious one. The problem I find here with the minister thinking is Sovereignty. Either God is the God of the Bible and therefore sovereign over all; or he is not. If God is not sovereign, then why worry about his ways, why worry about his judgments. Why put your faith in his plan of salvation; If he can only just barely overcome one of His creatures?

Let’s see what God says in Isaiah 41 “I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last. I am He.” The coastlands have seen and are afraid; The ends of the earth tremble; They have drawn near and have come…“But you, Israel, (elect) My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, Descendant of Abraham My friend, You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, And called from its remotest parts And said to you, ‘You are My servant, I have chosen you and not rejected you. ‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ “Behold, all those who are angered at you will be shamed and dishonored; Those who contend with you will be as nothing and will perish. “You will seek those who quarrel with you, but will not find them, Those who war with you will be as nothing and non-existent. (This includes Satan and his cohort)  “For I am the LORD your God, who upholds your right hand, Who says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.’ “Do not fear, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel; I will help you,” declares the LORD, “and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.

My God is the God of the Bible! He is sovereign and in control of all things! Satan is a creature. God could obliterate him at will, if He chose to! But that was not His plan. His plan was to redeem a sinful people by crushing His only son. To make Him our propitiation! Our replacement, and then to raise Him from the dead And Give Him His rightful place as King and Judge of the World. But this Gospel is foolishness to those who are perishing. So I ask you; who is your God?

What Is A Man - A Memorial Day Tribute

On this memorial day of the year 2012 I remember men who didn’t know what fate they’d meet and as I watch a short vignette of the horror and yet at times, pride they undoubtedly felt I’m overwhelmed with emotion. The moment compels me to ask, what is a man, really? Would I know one when I saw him, how does he live and most of all frightening, am I one?

I am most of all thankful that I have at this moment experienced even in the smallest sense of what it means to be a man. I’m thankful that I have at least learned that it is assuredly not what I thought it was. Words like tough, strong, unerring, brave, accomplished, polished come to mind, but I have learned these are substitutions, counterfeits that are easily faked. There can only be a single definition that universally applies and it’s a Godly definition.

Since it would be unduly burdensome to describe what a man is not, let me describe what a man is.

A man is first and foremost a man. He’s not a woman; he is not less than a man. He has innately a duty to perform that is basic; he must be the man. His role is defined firstly and utmost by his creator God and his highest duty is to seek out his creator God and worship Him, through the acquisition of knowledge; specifically knowledge of God. This essential duty is not a prerequisite to being a man, but rather a Christian man has understanding of the source of his manhood and this is the most advanced awareness a man can possibly have. Worldly men also have the ability to mimic Christian men and take on the qualities that are most definitively from God alone; but this is not to be confused. Men are men because God creates them to be. Christian men are men with a high knowledge of the reason they are men.

What is a man?

A man has a duty that he upholds not because of fear, or doubt or insecurity, but that God himself has commanded obedience to.  When a man performs a duty for any reason other than the truthful one, he shames himself and denies God; he is not man.

In marriage, God has commanded him to lead, be strong and most of all to love his wife like Christ has loved the church.

In brotherly relationships he’s been given a duty to use his strength with special prudence, for if by God’s patience and mercy his brothers might be granted repentance.

In worldly relationships he’s to learn to do good, seek justice, protect the orphan and provide for the widow.

In war he’s to be strong, be courageous, to not fear ANYTHING and in the most of all self-descriptive meanings; be a MAN. He is a unique and distinguished creation, called upon to name all the animals, be the progenitor of the first woman and to teach all other men about his creator; YHWH.

A man is strong; but his strength is perfected in weakness. His weakness is no shame for only one can rightfully shame him and that is God alone.

A man is gracious, but he learns mercy through pain and suffering. Suffering is no failing; it is to be endured with joy and thankfulness, for through it, faith (which is a special gift from almighty God), is perfected.

A man is a warrior, and he learns what’s must be fought for; He knows that will never be pride and vanity. For will a man suffer loss to neglect to fight for things that can only deprive him of his Godly character?

A man is not weak.

He loves unashamedly and without fear.

He remembers know past wrongs; they are erased from his mind.

He’s not afraid to be laughed at or ridiculed for showing weakness and emotion. He’s most of all strong to be willing to suffer these things; they are surely the character of God.

He is not a whelp, no, he is courageous.

He doesn’t care what you think, unless you think Godly things.

When you’re not looking, he’ll do what’s required even if hurts.

He knows the difference between the designs of the prince of the power of the air and Jesus Christ. He is not fooled by falsity; he is not ensnared by the world but trains himself for the calling of His master, like a soldier.

When he knows what is expected of him by God, he does it with joy.

He knows that he will be hated but he endures this with peace.

He has only Godly fear

He’s not ashamed of his power.

He’s not fearful of the world.

He entrusts himself to the one who can save him.

He learns obedience from the things from which he suffers.

His creator is the God of all that is. He has been knit in the womb of his mother for a singular and most identifiable cause. To be...a man and worshiper of God.

When this man gets married; it’s a covenant until the death.

When a man fights in a war; he’s fearless and will give everything, even his life. No matter how unrighteous the cause, the sacrifice is always true, for his calling is from God.

When a man is asked and even when he’s not, he will lay down his life for his friends. This man has no equal and Christ has demonstrated this love, that we should be called the sons of God.

Faith's Communication by A.W. Pink

From the human viewpoint, things are now in a bad state in the industrial and social realms. Sad is it to see so many able-bodied men anxious for work, but unable to obtain employment. But from the spiritual viewpoint, things are in a far worse state in the religious realm. Sad is it to see the anti-Christian cults flourishing on every side; but far more grievous is it, for those who are taught of God, to discover that much of the so-called “Gospel” which is now being preached in many “Fundamentalist churches” and “Gospel halls,” is but a Satanic delusion. The Devil knows that his captives are quite secure while the grace of God and the finished work of Christ are “faithfully” proclaimed to them, so long as the only way in which sinners receive the saving virtues of the Atonement is unfaithfully concealed. Whilst God’s peremptory and unchanging demand for repentance is left out, whilst Christ’s own terms of discipleship (i.e., how to become a Christian: Acts 11:26) in Luke 14:26, 27, 33 are withheld and whilst saving faith is frittered down to a mere act of the will, blind laymen will continue to be led by blind preachers, only for both to fall into the ditch.

Things are far, far worse even in the “orthodox” sections of Christendom than the majority of God’s own children are aware. Things are rotten even at the very foundation, for with very rare exceptions God’s way of salvation is no longer being taught. Tens of thousands are “ever learning” points of prophecy, the meaning of the types, the significance of the numerals, how to divide the “dispensations,” who are, nevertheless “unable to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7) of salvation itself—”unable,” because unwilling to pay the price (Proverbs 23:23), which is a full surrender to God Himself. So far as the writer understands the present situation, it seems to him that what is needed today is to press upon the serious attention of professing Christians such questions as, When is it that God applies to a sinner the virtues of Christ’s finished work? What is it which I am called upon to do in order to appropriate to myself the efficacy of Christ’s atonement? What is it which gives me an actual entrance into the good of His redemption?

The questions formulated above are only three different ways of framing the same inquiry. Now the popular answer which is being returned to them is, Nothing more is required from any sinner than that he simply believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. In the preceding chapters, we have sought to show that such a reply is misleading, inadequate, faulty, and that, because it ignores all the other scriptures which set forth what God requires from the sinner: it leaves out of account God’s demand for repentance (with all that that involves and includes), and Christ’s clearly defined terms of discipleship in Luke 14. To restrict ourselves to any one scripture term of a subject, or set of passages using that term, results in an erroneous conception of it. They who limit their ideas of regeneration to the one figure of the new birth, lapse into serious error upon it. So they who limit their thoughts on how to be saved to the one word “believe,” are easily misled. Diligent care needs to be taken to collect all that Scripture teaches on any subject if we are to have a properly balanced and accurate view thereof.

To be more specific. In Romans 10:13 we read, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Now does this mean that all who have, with their lips, cried unto the Lord, who have in the name of Christ besought God to have mercy on them, been saved by Him? They who reply in the affirmative, are only deceived by the mere sound of words, as the deluded Romanist is when he contends for Christ’s bodily presence in the bread, because He said “this is my body.” And how are we to show the papist is misled? Why, by comparing Scripture with Scripture. So here. The writer well remembers being on a ship in a terrible storm off the coast of Newfoundland. All the hatches were battened down, and for three days no passenger was allowed on the decks. Reports from the stewards were disquieting. Strong men paled. As the winds increased and the ship rolled worse and worse, scores of men and women were heard calling upon the name of the Lord. Did He save them? A day or two later when the weather was cleared, those same men and women were drinking, cursing, card-playing!

Perhaps someone asks, But does not Romans 10:13 say what it means? Certainly it does, but no verse of Scripture yields its meaning to lazy people. Christ Himself tells us that there are many who call Him “Lord,” to whom He will say “Depart from me” (Matthew 7:22, 23). Then what is to be done with Romans 10:13? Why, diligently compare it with all other passages which make known what the sinner must do ere God will save him. If nothing more than the fear of death or horror of Hell prompts the sinner to call upon the Lord, he might just as well call upon the trees. The Almighty is not at the beck and call of any rebel, who, when he is terrified, sues for mercy.

“He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination” (Proverbs 28:9)!

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).

The only “calling upon His name” which the Lord heeds, is that which issues from a broken, penitent, sin-hating heart, which thirsts after holiness.

The same principle applies to Acts 16:31 and all similar texts: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” To a casual reader, that seems a very simple matter, yet a closer pondering of those words should discover that more is involved than at first sight appears. Note that the apostles did not merely tell the Philippian jailer to “rest on the finished work of Christ,” or “trust in His atoning sacrifice.” Instead, it was a Person that was set before him. Again, it was not simply “Believe on the Savior,” but “the Lord Jesus Christ.” John 1:12 shows plainly that to “believe” is to “receive,” and to be saved, a sinner must receive One who is not only a Savior but “Lord,” yea, who must be received as “Lord” before He becomes the Savior of that person. And to receive “Christ Jesus the Lord” (Colossians 2:6) necessarily involves the renouncing of our own sinful lordship, the throwing down of the weapons of our own warfare against Him, and the submitting to His yoke and rule. And before any human rebel is brought to do that, a miracle of Divine grace has to be wrought within him. And this brings us more immediately to the present aspect of our theme.

Saving faith is not a native product of the human heart, but is a spiritual grace communicated from on High. “It is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). It is “of the operation of God” (Colossians 2:12). It is by “the power of God” (1 Corinthians 2:5). A most remarkable passage on this subject is found in Ephesians 1:16-20. There we find the apostle Paul praying that the saints should have the eyes of their understanding enlightened, that they might know “what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead.”

Note the strong expressions here used: not merely the power of God, or the greatness of it, but the “exceeding greatness of his power to usward.” Note too the standard of comparison: we “believe according to the working of his mighty power which he wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead.”

God put forth His “mighty power” when He resurrected Christ. There was a mighty difficulty to be overcome, even the vanquishing of the grave. There was a mighty result to be achieved, even the bringing to life One who was dead. None but God Himself was equal to a miracle so stupendous. Strictly analogous is that miracle of grace which issues in saving faith. The Devil employs all his arts and power to retain his captive. The sinner is dead in trespasses and sins, and can no more quicken himself than he can create a world. His heart is bound fast with the grave-clothes of worldly and fleshly lusts, and only Omnipotence can raise it into communion with God. Well may every true servant of the Lord emulate the apostle Paul and pray earnestly that God will enlighten His people concerning this wonder of wonders, so that instead of attributing their faith to an exercise of their own will, they may freely ascribe all the honor and glory unto Him to whom alone it justly belongs.

If only the professing Christian of this untoward generation could begin to obtain some adequate conception of the real condition of every man by nature, they might be less inclined to cavil against the teaching that nothing short of a miracle of grace can ever qualify any sinner to believe unto the saving of his soul. If they could only see that the heart’s attitude toward God of the most refined and moral, is not one whit different than that of the most vulgar and vicious; that he who is most kind and benevolent toward his fellow-creatures, has no more real desire after Christ than has the most selfish and brutal; then it would be evident that Divine power must operate to change the heart. Divine power was needed to create, but much greater power is required to regenerate a soul: creation is only the beginning of something out of nothing, but regeneration is the transforming not only of an unlovely object, but one who resists with all its might the gracious designs of the Heavenly Potter.

It is not simply that the Holy Spirit approaches a heart in which there is no love for God, but He finds it filled with enmity against Him, and incapable of being subject to His law (Romans 8:7). True, the individual himself may be quite unconscious of this terrible fact, yea, ready to indignantly deny it. But that is easily accounted for. If he has heard of little or nothing but the love, the grace, the mercy, the goodness of God, it would indeed be surprising if he hated Him. But once the God of Scripture is made known to him in the power of the Spirit; once he is made to realize that God is the Governor of this world, demanding unqualified submission to all His laws; that He is inflexibly just, and “will by no means clear the guilty”; that He is sovereign, and loves whom He pleases and hates whom He wills; that so far from being an easy-going, indulgent Creator, who winks at the follies of His creatures, He is ineffably holy, so that His righteous wrath burns against all the workers of iniquity—then will people be conscious of indwelling enmity surging up against Him. And nothing but the almighty power of the Spirit can overcome that enmity and bring any rebel to truly love the God of Holy Writ.

Rightly did Thomas Goodwin the Puritan say,

“A wolf will sooner marry a lamb, or a lamb a wolf, than ever a carnal heart will be subject to the law of God, which was the ancient husband of it— Romans 7:6. It is the turning of one contrary to another. To turn water into wine, there is some kind of symbolizing, yet that is a miracle. But to turn a wolf into a lamb, to turn fire into water, is a yet greater miracle. Between nothing and something there is an infinite distance, but between sin and grace there is a greater distance than can be between nothing and the highest angel in Heaven…To destroy the power of sin in a man’s soul is as great a work as to take away the guilt of sin. It is easier to say to a blind man, See, and to a lame man, Walk, than to say to a man that lies under the power of sin, Live, be holy, for there is that that will not be subject.”

In 2 Corinthians 10:4 the apostle describes the character of that work in which the true servants of Christ are engaged. It is a conflict with the forces of Satan. The weapons of their warfare are “not carnal”—as well might modern soldiers go forth equipped with only wooden swords and paper shields, as preachers think to liberate the devil’s captives by means of human learning, worldly methods, touching anecdotes, attractive singing, etc. No, “their weapons” are the “Word of God” and “all prayer” (Ephesians 6:17,18); and even these are only mighty “through God,” that is, by His direct and special blessing of them to particular souls. In what follows, a description is given of wherein the might of God is here seen, namely, in the powerful opposition which it meets with and vanquishes: “(to the pulling down of strongholds;) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

Herein lies the power of God when He is pleased to thus put it forth in the saving of a sinner. The heart of that sinner is fortified against Him: it is steeled against His holy demands, His righteous claims. It is determined not to submit to His law, nor to abandon those idols which it prohibits. That haughty rebel has made up his mind that he will not turn away from the delights of this world and the pleasures of sin, and give God the supreme place in his affections. But God has determined to overcome his sinful opposition, and transform him into a loving and loyal subject. The figure here used is that of a besieged town—the heart; its “strongholds”—the reigning power of fleshly and worldly lusts—are “pulled down”; self-will is broken, pride is subdued, and the defiant rebel is made a willing captive to “the obedience of Christ”! “Mighty through God” points to this miracle of grace.

There is one other detail pointed by the analogy drawn in Ephesians 1:19-21 which exemplifies the mighty power of God, namely, “and set Him (Christ) at His own right hand in the heavenly places.” The members of Christ’s mystical body are predestinated to be conformed to the glorious image of their glorified Head: in measure, now; perfectly, in the Day to come. The ascension of Christ was contrary to nature, being opposed by the law of gravitation. But the power of God overcame that opposition, and translated His resurrected Son bodily into Heaven. In like manner, His grace produces in His people that which is contrary to nature, overcoming the opposition of the flesh, and drawing their hearts unto things above. How we would marvel if we saw a man extend his arms and suddenly leave the earth, soaring upward into the sky. Yet still more wonderful is it when we behold the power of the Spirit causing a sinful creature to rise above temptation, worldliness, and sin, and breathe the atmosphere of Heaven; when a human soul is made to disdain the things of earth and find its satisfaction in things above.

The historical order in connection with the Head in Ephesians 1:19, 20 is also the experimental order with regard to the members of His body. Before setting His Son at His own right hand in the heavenlies, God raised Him from the dead; so, before the Holy Spirit fixes the heart of a sinner upon Christ, He first quickens him into newness of life. There must be life before there can be sight, believing, or good works performed. One who is physically dead is incapable of doing anything; so he who is spiritually dead is incapable of any spiritual exercises. First the giving of life unto dead Lazarus, and then the removing of the grave-clothes which bound him hand and foot. God must regenerate before there can be a “new creature in Christ Jesus.” The washing of a child follows its birth.

When spiritual life has been communicated to the soul, that individual is now able to see things in their true colors. In God’s light he sees light (Psalm 36:9). He is now given to perceive (by the Holy Spirit) what a lifelong rebel he has been against his Creator and Benefactor: that instead of making God’s will his rule, he has gone his own way; that instead of having before him God’s glory, he has sought only to please and gratify self. Even though he may have been preserved from all the grosser outward forms of wickedness, he now recognizes that he is a spiritual leper, a vile and polluted creature, utterly unfit to draw near, still less to dwell with, Him who is ineffably holy; and such an apprehension makes him feel that his case is hopeless.

There is a vast difference between hearing or reading of what conviction of sin is, and being made to feel it in the depths of one’s own soul. Multitudes are acquainted with the theory, who are total strangers to the experience of it. One may read of the sad effects of war, and may agree that they are indeed dreadful; but when the enemy is at one’s own door, plundering his goods, firing his home, slaying his dear ones, he is far more sensible of the miseries of war than ever he was (or could be) previously. So an unbeliever may hear of what a dreadful state the sinner is in before God, and how terrible will be the sufferings of Hell; but when the Spirit brings home to his own heart its actual condition, and makes him feel the heat of God’s wrath in his own conscience, he is ready to sink with dismay and despair. Reader, do you know anything of such an experience?

Only thus is any soul prepared to truly appreciate Christ. They that are whole need not a physician. The one who has been savingly convicted, is made to realize that none but the Lord Jesus can heal one so despairingly diseased by sin; that He alone can impart that spiritual health (holiness) which will enable him to run in the way of God’s commandments; that nothing but His precious blood can atone for the sins of the past and naught but His all-sufficient grace can meet the pressing needs of the present and future. Thus, there must be discerning faith, before there is coming faith. The Father “draws” to the Son (John 6:44) by imparting to the mind a deep realization of my desperate need of Christ, by giving to the heart a real sense of the inestimable worth of Him, and by causing the will to receive Him on His own terms.

Justified By Grace

Justified By Grace

I heard a message this morning that I had to write about. If only to get my thoughts on paper; the pastor was preaching on Galatians 3:1-9.

You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

What hit home for me was when the preacher asked to fill in the Blank. “Though I know I was justified freely by God’s grace thru faith in Christ alone. I act foolishly when ________” I started to write a list of answers, when I realized that this was going to be a long list.

I know that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ (Romans 10) why then do I neglect to have my family in church? I make excuses, “I can’t find the right one”, or “the drive is to long”, and most often “they don’t believe the same thing on election and sovereignty”. Satan most often attacks my faith! Then I weaken my faith by not taking every opportunity to hear God’s word preached!

I also act foolishly when I punish myself for sin usually with guilt, and quite often then I neglect my devotions or prayer because I feel guilty. Who am I to think I should be punished for that which Christ already died for, and paid for! Return immediately to Christ and ask forgiveness. Especially since neglecting my time alone with God and prayer usually leads to more foolishness!

When I go thru times of prolonged foolishness I actually start to question my faith. Which I know is kind of normal, seeing that assurance is, I believe is a blessing obtained and kept thru living a life of holiness not by our own strength but thru God’s power and plan (Ephesians 2:9). If my adoption and position in Christ are secure, then how can I ever doubt. Ephesians 1:7-14 especially verse 13 & 14

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.

If we have heard the message of the Gospel by the Word of Christ (Romans 10) and believed that which we heard then we are sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of Promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance. I like the way the ESV translates it better in this case it says this way “were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Guarantee [Gk. arrabṓn]. A commercial term for the deposit or down payment that secures a legal claim or makes a contract binding.

So in all this I say it is utter foolishness to doubt that which God promised.  Let God be true and every man a liar!

So what is my point in all this? We are saved by faith! Continue to walk by faith now! We did not earn God’s favor thru works. We cannot keep God’s Favor by works now! Our relationship with Him is all on Him. We are weak and will continue to fail Him unless we understand and Give Him the glory and praise for which we can take no credit for, our continued sanctification!

Does Your Theological Doctrine Pre-Dispose You To The Possession of Slaves?

I heard it said - "I can't substantiate this, but this [discussion of determinism] makes me believe that Calvanists would have been okay with slavery and arminians would not have..."

I wanted to think this through with all the sequenced knowledge and tenants I know, as a calvanist. Since I cannot rightly say that I would not in any circumstance own, or be a slave, I can only rely on Spirit led knowledge and illumination of truth for my answer to the question.

But therein lies the problem, in the matters of fact of slavery, or any condition of mankind we cannot assume different circumstances in the present condition and expect different results. That is, the conditions - produce the results. The results are not simply a matter of choice. But I'm getting ahead of myself. If you're not into thinking, or evaluating thought processes to help train your own, just skip to the bottom paragraph.

The Two Systems

Calvanism/Determinsm - All of the tenants of calvanism will not be discussed here, suffice it to say that a calvanist is either 100% in agreement that all things are determined, or they rely on the word mystery to come to agreement on the issue of evil, yet, they stand by the fact that all things are necessarily determined from before the foundation of the world.

Arminianism/Free Will - The arminian, or more commonly known, Contemporary modern evangelical believes that God determines nothing or, determines some things, but not all, or has given man the power to determine things, predicated on a degrading system that would set into place that has rules and laws. Some of which can be bent, and some broken. Man is entirely responsible for his actions, by his own moral choice and necessarily must have the freedom to do so, in order for God to be just.

Now - to the question of slavery. It's pretty obvious and I think a fair accusation to say that on the matter of slavery, or any determined thing a calvanist would not necessarily believe things needed to be different. That is, the calvanist knows that if slavery does exist, is certainly necessarily exists. But - how does the calvanist do this? Isn't there a pertuberance of the mind? Should the calvanist attempt to change the wrong evils of man?

A mature calvanist recognizes that all men are evil. There are none who do good, all have turned aside, all seek evil. So he is not encumbered with the belief that slavery is any worse than, lying, or murder, or adultery. At least, in his ability to judge sin, all of it seperates you eternally from God.

The arminian however, and it makes sense given their world view, would attempt and believe it to be in their power to reconcile the wrong-doings of man-kind. This calvanist believes that, that Arminian is likely to overlook his own sin, in his hatred of slavery and he's likely to elevate slavery as a higher moral sin than his, more justifiable, understable and relatable, "respectable-sin" if ever there was one. But, that is an accusation that is only based on experience and not verifiable fact. So let me keep to the matter at hand. The principal issue here is that the Arminian does not recognize his own defect at determining what is wrong and what is right. He would say, slavery is OBVIOUSLY wrong!

Well - from who's perspective? The writer understands and is well aware of the sentimentality that has been injected, from birth, on the black/white race discrimination matters. Yet, this has nothing whatsover to do with slavery, nor the pursuit of what is right and true. God enslaved His own people many times. To the Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians and many, many more. Read Judges. So - if God does it, does that make it wrong?

The answer is, God doing it, doesn't make it wrong for Him, but it can still be wrong for us. Consider the matter of the killing of His own Son. Thou shalt not, murder. Christ was innocent, yet the Arminian will have no problem assigning the blame to the Jews first, and then the Gentiles (Romans). Yet - Acts says, specifically, that God planned it and it could be no other way.

Then, there is Paul, a very strong writer and revealer of doctrine in the faith. What is his stance on slavery? Specifically, he says that whether bond or free, you are to serve God. He implores a slave owner - who was a Christian, to take back his slave. Notice, when he has the chance what he doesn't say..."say....philemon, you know slavery's wrong and remember how our people were once enslaved...you wouldn't like that, would you? C'mon let the guy go".

It should be stated that my goal is not to justify slavery, bring it back to contemporary times, or even defend it. I'm simply looking at facts and asking the question...would a Calvanist accept slavery where the Arminian would end it?

What's slightly strange about this is that on one side, the Arminian has no trouble saying "you made your bed, now sleep in it" which is a direct statement of their faith. You are morally responsible for your deeds because of your freedom of choice and awareness of consequences.

It's strange that the Arminian would not apply the same logic to slaves. Did they not suffer due to being weak, inferior in intellect, or skills of war? Certainly, if they were conquered by force, they were still yet conquered...were they not and now, they are at the disposal of their captors?

The arminian doesn't apologize for winning a hand of poker, or running a race and winning do they? Certainly they praise themselves, even if they invoke the name of God when they say that "I have won the race - thanks be to God"....

Why is it suddenly wrong or evil to apply the same means of logic to slavery or even imprisonment? I find it utterly strange that an Arminian could look at a criminal, who by the results of his free choices, found himself in imprisonment, and yet a slave who was once free, by his free choices also found himself in the same place. But the Arminian does not reason like this!

Freedom is defined so broadly in one sense and so narrowly in another, it is a moving target! Freedom is the ability to choose and the slave chose to be a slave, by not having the power to choose differently (isn't he JUST as resposible not NOT choosing to have the power to choose, when he had the chance?). He should have chosen to have the power to choose differently! But, this is the conundrum that the arminian falls into. How can he do so?!

HE CAN'T! And that is exactly the problem with the theological view. Because the Bible says that YOU and I are slaves to sin. And except we are chosen of God and transferred into His dominion, we will remain that way, forever. No matter what we choose.

SO - to answer the question, does your worldview predispose you to slavery. Unashamedly, let me say, yes. You will accept what God has planned as necessary and you will see it for the GOOD of those who are called and love God, if you're a calvanist. And you'll see life happening to you and you'll be a victim at times and a victor at others, having no sense of why God seems so capricious if you're an Armininan.

And if you're an arminian on his worst day, you'll reason that a slave is a slave because he chose to be taken captive, by not choosing something higher.

But at the core - humanity is desperately wicked. So I am not surprised when evil men, perpetrate evil against one another. But God is Holy, so let Him be true and all men be liars.

Put no confidence in the flesh, but in all ways acknowledge God, he will direct your path. And the Spirit, will lead His elect into all truth and righteousness.

Psalms 39: I Have Become Mute

I said, "I will guard my ways that I might not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle while the wicked are in my presence".

I was mute and silent, I refrained even from good. And my sorrow grew worse, My heard was hot within me. While I was musing the fire burned, then I spoke with my tongue.

In verses 1-4 David is making a "new years" resolutions in a manner of speaking. But he's also making ungodly resolution because his confidence is in his flesh, his power, his strength, his determination to keep silent. We don't specifically know what he wanted to keep silent about, how it came to be that he felt he needed to be. We've all however, experienced sin with our tongue, so at least on that level we can relate. David says "I will...". Trust the Bible as it makes clear that any sentence that presumes that power of God and then seeks it's own glory under the banner of "I will..." will most assuredly be reproved.

In verses 4-6 we take a breif aside; which is the setup for the cause of David's silence. Something that he makes unambiguously clear. In his realization or declaration, which ever it is, he praises God. Let us drink deeply as we think through David's obvious and definite understanding of his relationship to our Father YHWH.

LORD, make me to know my end and what is the extent of my day; let me know how transient I am. Behold you have made my days as a handsbreadth and my lifetime as nothing in your sight. Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Surely every man walks about as a phantom, surely they make an uproar for nothing. He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.

Now - let's break that down.

LORD, make me to know my end and what is the extent of my day

Through the sheer pleasure and power of the HOLY SPIRIT, men are sometimes confronted with futility of things; sometimes even their own life. David asks for this, since on some level he totally recognizes his own futility in controlling himself (as the Psalmist will conclude).

Let me know how transient I am

Let me know to my core how small I really am. Allow me to believe that I play a part of no significance. Let me absorb how utterly whimsical I am in light of your total story. I matter not at all and want to see that from your eyes; so that my perspective of self might surely be put to death and your perspective of me my surely reign forever. All that I do is certainly your hand on mind, all that I say is surely your HOLY SPIRIT causing this clay pot to speak. A heavely sight to be sure, but none less than miraculous and deserving of no credit to the pot; only the potter.

Behold you've made my days as a handsbreadth and my lifetime is nothing in your sight.

Surely David would have know of Adam and Methuselah and probably would have seen long life as a gift of God; one that he was not deserving of. And not only this, with the wisdom of the HOLY SPIRIT, David certainly saw that his life would only just begin before it was time to die. He's drinking this in, as should we all.

Surely every man walks about as a phantom, surely they make an uproar for nothing. He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.

And now we see what is the pre-amble for Solomon's great work that everything is VANITY & PRIDE! And God rejects both with reproofs.

How does this wonderful exchange with God end? I'm SO glad you asked.

And now LORD, for what do I wait? My HOPE IS IN YOU, Deliver me from all my transgressions, make me not the reproach of the foolish.

I have become mute, I do not open my mouth. ((WHY?))

Because it is YOU who have done it.

This just has so much more meaning now...

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. – Proverbs 3:5-6

A Diamond of Great Worth

You are more than flesh and bone
Can't you see you're something beautiful
Yeah you gotta believe, you gotta believe
He wants you to see, He wants you to see
That you're not just some wandering soul
That can't be seen and can't be known
Yeah you gotta believe, you gotta believe that you
Are someone worth dying for

I heard a song called “Someone Worth Dying For” by Mikes Chair a while back. The words are listed above. From the Start I didn’t quite like this song. Something about it rubbed me the wrong way! Then I realized that the song places value on me! So that is the question. Because God the Father chose me and Christ died for me. Does that make me valuable? Does that make me, a sinner worth dying for? A couple thoughts come immediately to mind.

Ezekiel 16:4-13

“As for your birth, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for cleansing; you were not rubbed with salt or even wrapped in cloths. “No eye looked with pity on you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you. Rather you were thrown out into the open field, for you were abhorred on the day you were born. “When I passed by you and saw you squirming in your blood, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’…..“Then I passed by you and saw you, and behold, you were at the time for love; so I spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. I also swore to you and entered into a covenant with you so that you became Mine,” declares the Lord GOD. “Then I bathed you with water, washed off your blood from you and anointed you with oil. “I also clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of porpoise skin on your feet; and I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk. “I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck. “I also put a ring in your nostril, earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. “Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your dress was of fine linen, silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey and oil; so you were exceedingly beautifu.

The picture here is clear “No eye looked with pity on you! Rather you were thrown out into the open field, for you were abhorred on the day you were born! Christ then adorns us and makes us beautiful. Clothed in His Righteousness.

The other question is this is a corpse worth anything?

Ephesians 2:1 –10

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

I can hear the arguments now! Because He died for me I must be worth dying for! Our Pride rebels against the idea of being worthless. In the parable of the pearl of great price,( Matthew 13) the man sells all he has to gain the pearl. The kingdom is the pearl. The man is worth nothing without it! What we gain assigns a certain value but it does not change the fact that at the core, without Christ I’m still worthless! So what is the proper way to think about this! So here is my analogy! We as Christians are diamonds in the rough, but we are not the diamonds. Christ is! I’m the rough that’s being chipped away to reveal Christ!

1 Peter 2:4-10

And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For this is contained in Scripture: “BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.” This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone, ” and, “A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.

Waiting

Isaiah 40:31

Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.

What is waiting? The dictionary defines it as this: To stay where one is or delay action until a particular time or until something else happens.

The Bible is full of verses on waiting on the Lord! But what is it, and why is it important? We live in a microwave age! You don’t have to wait for anything! You can’t drive 5 miles without having somebody pass you because they are in a hurry, or was that I can’t drive five miles without passing somebody; hmm..  So if you are anything like I am, this concept is foreign to you. But with verses like Isaiah 40:31 and Psalms 33:20 it must be important. The Psalms are full of verses about waiting for the Lord! I think it begins with the understanding that God is worth waiting for Psalms 62 says it this way “My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.

Bound up in a God worth waiting for is also the understanding that God is Sovereign. Isaiah 40:

O Jerusalem, bearer of good news; Lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” Behold, the Lord GOD will come with might, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him And His recompense before Him. Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And marked off the heavens by the span, And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales? Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, Or as His counselor has informed Him? With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge And informed Him of the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales; Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust……Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power.

So God is the only one who can help whatever situation we find ourselves in; In these fast pace days though, do we wait on God! Do we bend our foolish pride enough to simply wait? Not usually.. No it has to be taught! You must first have a problem too big for you. One that you can’t solve by yourself; then if you are anything like me, you pray! And expect God to answer NOW! So then you pray again, then you flip on the tube or read the paper. Then you start to get frustrated with God. Like this is His only concern!

So what should our response be? First, repent.. unbend your pride and ask God to forgive you. Understand that God has only your best interest at heart (Romans 8:28). Also that the answer you want might not be what’s best for you at all (Joseph for example) or that you might never get an answer this side of the daisies. I don’t know if Job ever knew why all that calamity struck, but he certainly learned how to wait!

Secondly, quiet humility. See, you have to take all this into account. If God is sovereign then He already knows about your situation and planned it that way, for your good. We can trust Him completely then, no matter what happens. The loss a job or loved on or even a debilitating disease. How else will God teach us to trust Him? 1 Peter Says this

” In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.”

God is Holy and Sovereign; in Him is no darkness at all! He can’t make a mistake! So what do you do?

Find a place where you can get alone with God on your knees! Then pour your heart out to Him. Then simply be quiet! Don’t say amen and just wait till the spirit gives you permission to get up. Maybe five minutes, maybe 30 minutes, it doesn’t really matter. The point is you are just still and quiet before an Awesome God! Then Live the rest of your life in that understanding, weather the trial  lasts just for a season or for a lifetime.

I'm waiting
I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am hopeful
I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it is painful
But patiently, I will wait

I will move ahead, bold and confident
Taking every step in obedience
While I'm waiting
I will serve You
While I'm waiting
I will worship
While I'm waiting
I will not faint
I'll be running the race
Even while I wait

I'm waiting
I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am peaceful
I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it's not easy
But faithfully, I will wait
Yes, I will wait
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting on you Lord!

Only By His Grace - The Personal Testimony of Rod Proefrock

He knew me before I was conceived.  He knew my prideful, arrogant, selfish attitude that would bring Him dishonor and cause others pain and heartache.  He knew the decisions I would make that would hurt others and benefit myself.  He knew my lust for sex, money and success that would cause fornication, abortion, debt and undeserved position and power.  He knew my anger that would cause broken hands, hearts and bloody faces.  Yet through it all He loved me.  He pursued me. He met with me.  On that day as I came face to face with His Grace my heart was crushed by the reality of my sin. He didn’t scold me for my wrong.  He didn’t shame me for my acts.  He didn’t point and wave the finger of disappointment.  No, Oh no!  He stretched out His bloody hands and pulled me into his beaten body and wrapped me up In His loving arms and whispered in my ear and said...It’s ok, I got you, you are covered, I love you, it is Finished.  Now come, come follow me.  I have some work for you.  I have a purpose and plan that is not of this world.  It is not going to be easy or even make sense at times but it’s not about you anymore.  It’s for Gods glory, others blessings and your eternal benefit.   You are going to give like you have never given, You are going to love like you have never loved,  you are going feel compassion like you have never felt, you are going see like you have never seen, hear like you have never heard, smell like you have never smelled, speak like you have never spoken.  Your battle is different now.  It’s not with flesh and blood anymore.  But I want you to know that I have Won the war.  So he took my guilt, my pain, my lust, my greed, my pride, my selfishness, my anger, my bitterness, my unforgiveness and wrapped me in His Peace, Joy, Love, Kindness, Gentleness, Longsuffering, Faithfullness, Self Control and Goodness.  My life has never been the same and never will be.  For I know and am fully convinced that Almighty God met with me, despite of my sin,  at an appointed time and by the power of the Holy Spirit illuminated Jesus Christ and Him Crucified and Risen and eliminated my sin forever.  Now I have no other choice but to be zealous, compelled only by His love for me, for the cause of the one who purchased me by His blood…Jesus Christ!.  This is the Grace that has gripped my life.  This is the Grace that causes me to bury self daily and allow Him to live through me.  This is the Grace that gives me hatred toward sin and a Love for that which is good.  This is the Grace that unlocked the truth that set me free. This is the Grace that can Save, Sanctify and fully Redeem a human soul.  Red, instead of Green, is my favorite color now.

Everyone has a testimony.  The detail of that testimony varies from person to person depending on how the sin manifested itself.   Whether in appearance you are an adulterer, murderer, liar, stealer or cheater, the reality is we are all of these in our heart and sin has come forth from there.  We can try and have tried many “things” to contain sin, but there is only one antidote that can fully kill and heal it:   The Blood of Jesus Christ.

My Story

I am writing the Story of my life to be a testament to the Grace of God in My life. (If anyone reads this understand that it is written from my point of view only and I don't touch on what was going on in my families lives during this story, their exclusion does not mean that they were not important to me. My marriage to Stacey and the birth of my three sons remain pillars of my life.)

I was raised in a Christian home; I got saved when I was five, (or so I have always said) Our pastor gave an invitation at the end of a sermon and My cousin and I went forward together, form that point on my life has been filled with a performance based religion where I thought that everything I did from sin, to missing my devotions in the morning effected how much God loved me (I did not know that about myself until a short time ago) my life was a spiritual roller coaster with a lot more downs than ups, It was characterized by sin and defeat which fueled my certainty that God could not love a “Christian” like me. About eight years ago I left the church I was raised in, I was certain something was wrong with the pastor, his messages were full of judgment and had no hope, no love, everything I did was a disappointment to him, he even told me that I deserved a series of bad accidents and financial trouble, and were due to the fact that I listened to Contemporary Christian Music, the churches standard was that music with any drums in it at all was offensive to a Holy God. The church had become extremely legalistic and I was not growing at all. So my family and I left the church. We found a wonderful church about 15 miles down the road where the Pastor preached the Word of God, I started to grow again a little at a time but the besetting sin was still there nagging at me that “how can a person live this way and be saved” but it was the best time of my life, I became good friends with the pastor (Jon Speed). We hung out on an almost daily basis which kept me happy and feeling that God was still in my life. Later on Pastor Jon invited me to a hear a minister where I listened to one of the most powerful messages I've ever heard. Pastor Jon made a decision for Christ, I felt nothing. Pastor Jon wasn't sure he had ever truly been saved. I realize now that this was a pivotal point in my life, It was here that God made it plain to my soul that I was not saved, My pride rebelled against this thought, how could I tell my friends, my family that I was not saved. So I brushed off God’s conviction and told myself that I believed all the right things, I knew I was a sinner, I knew that Christ lived a perfect life and that He died to take my place on the cross. I was even remorseful for my sin. A few more months past with Jon making radical changes and talking about eventually leaving the church; I really didn't think He would because God wouldn't take His biggest influences out of my life. God had already called my best friend Tim Crawford to go to Word of life. What God has shown me is that I had been relying on Tim and Jon as Spiritual Crutches to keep my soul happy in mediocrity. God then called both of them into an evangelism ministry in Texas, and my two best friends moved out of my life. This spiraled my life out of control. They had been my two biggest allies against sin and any part of a godly life. God removed my crutches and I fell hard into sin, I devoted all of my time and energies into fulfilling all of my passions. I could not get away with this type of sin with them in my life. They loved God and their influence on me

Kept me from total depravity!
From that day on I had no one to rely on and I believed in my heart of hearts that God had abandoned me to my own demise. Sin ruled in my life and I was helpless before it. So my life continued that way for the next five years, it’s a terrible thing to know the plan of salvation and know the punishment of hell that waits if I didn't get my life right. I awoke each morning knowing that I was a sinner and that if I didn't change I was bound for an eternity in Hell, because how could God love a person like me. My marriage was broken and almost over with so I knew something had to change I did not want my family to leave me. What God has shown me since then is that because Tim and Jon left God was able to show me the total depravity my soul was in, so when I sunk as low as I could go without causing permanent damage to my soul and my life God graciously allowed me to seek counsel from an old friend from grade school to pray for me and meet with me around Christmas 2008, I told him about every aspect of my life and opened up my life for his inspection crying out for help. We spent hours talking, he kept coming back to the fact that I had been raised with a wrong understanding of The Grace of God, and that he had gone through the same sort of thing about 2 years before, and recommended the book Holiness by Grace written by Brian Chapell which helped correct that. We finished up and when I got in the car and cried out to God praying that He would not give up on me. That He would not let me die before I knew whether or not I could be saved.

I said amen and turned on the radio and heard for the first time Tenth Avenue’s song

By Your Side and these are the words

Why are you striving these days
Why are you trying to earn grace
Why are you crying
Let me lift up your face
Just don't turn away

Why are you looking for love
Why are you still searching as if I'm not enough
To where will you go child
Tell me where will you run
To where will you run

And I'll be by your side
Wherever you fall
In the dead of night
Whenever you call
And please don't fight
These hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you

Look at these hands and my side
They swallowed the grave on that night
When I drank the world's sin
So I could carry you in
And give you life
I want to give you life

It was this act of grace by God that gave me hope. I cried most of the way home, when I got home I ordered Holiness by Grace. I started reading it right away and read that when God saves you he not only forgives you of the sin you already committed but he forgives you for the stuff you haven’t done yet and from that moment on He looks at the righteousness of Christ first before he sees us. That sin although it still disappoints God does not affect our standing before God. I now know that my conversion when I was five was false. God miraculously saved me in January 2009. I had been standing on my own righteousness and pride to save me I thought that I had to do something for God to love me and forgive me, now I know that it is only His Grace that allows us to repent of our sin and only by His grace can we stand and live in this life.
So now I can say like the song writer Steven Curtis Chapman in his song Angel’s Wish

I have seen the dark and desperate place where sin will take you
I've felt loneliness and shame
And I have watched the blinding light of grace
Come breaking through with a sweetness only tasted
By the forgiven and redeemed.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Sorrowing I shall be in spirit,
Till released from flesh and sin,
Yet from what I do inherit,
Here Thy praises I’ll begin;
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood;
How His kindness yet pursues me
Mortal tongue can never tell,
Clothed in flesh, till death shall loose me
I cannot proclaim it well.

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

O that day when freed from sinning,
I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in blood washed linen
How I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace;
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry,

Take my ransomed soul away;
Send thine angels now to carry
Me to realms of endless day.

Robert Robinson had a rough beginning. His father died when he was young, and his mother, unable to control him, sent him to London to learn barbering. What he learned instead was drinking and gang-life. When he was 17, he and his friends reportedly visited a fortune-teller. Relaxed by alcohol, they laughed as she tried to tell their futures. But something about the encounter bothered Robert, and that evening he suggested to his buddies they attend the evangelistic meeting being held by George Whitefield. Whitefield was one of history’s greatest preachers, with a voice that was part foghorn and part violin. That night he preached from Matthew 3:7: ‘‘But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, ‘‘Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?’’ Bursting into tears, White-field exclaimed, ‘‘Oh, my hearers! The wrath to come! The wrath to come!’’ Robert immediately sobered up and sensed Whitefield was preaching directly to him. The preacher’s words haunted him for nearly three years, until December 10, 1755, when he gave his heart to Christ. Robert soon entered the ministry, and three years later at age 23, while serving Calvinist Methodist Chapel in Norfolk, England, he wrote a hymn for his sermon on Pentecost Sunday. It was a prayer that the Holy Spirit flood into our hearts with His streams of mercy, enabling us to sing God’s praises and remain faithful to Him. ‘‘Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,’’ has been a favorite of the church since that day. Robinson continued working for the Lord until 1790, when he was invited to Birmingham, England, to preach for Dr. Joseph Priestly, a noted Unitarian. There, on the morning of June 8, he was found dead at age 54, having passed away quietly during the night. Take a few moments to offer this hymn as a personal prayer, especially remembering those last insightful lines: Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

Mercy and Judgment : Morning and Evening by: Charles H. Spurgeon

I will sing of lovingkindness and justice, To You, O LORD, I will sing praises.

Psalms 101:1

Faith triumphs in trial. When reason is thrust into the inner prison, with her feet made fast in the stocks, faith makes the dungeon walls ring with her merry notes as she cries, "I will sing of mercy and of judgment. Unto thee, O Lord, will I sing." Faith pulls the black mask from the face of trouble, and discovers the angel beneath. Faith looks up at the cloud, and sees that "'Tis big with mercy and shall break In blessings on her head." There is a subject for song even in the judgments of God towards us. For, first, the trial is not so heavy as it might have been; next, the trouble is not so severe as we deserved to have borne; and our affliction is not so crushing as the burden which others have to carry. Faith sees that in her worst sorrow there is nothing penal; there is not a drop of God's wrath in it; it is all sent in love. Faith discerns love gleaming like a jewel on the breast of an angry God. Faith says of her grief, "This is a badge of honour, for the child must feel the rod"; and then she sings of the sweet result of her sorrows, because they work her spiritual good. Nay, more, says Faith, "These light afflictions, which are but for a moment, work out for me a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." So Faith rides forth on the black horse, conquering and to conquer, trampling down carnal reason and fleshly sense, and chanting notes of victory amid the thickest of the fray. "All I meet I find assists me In my path to heavenly joy: Where, though trials now attend me, Trials never more annoy. "Blest there with a weight of glory, Still the path I'll ne'er forget, But, exulting, cry, it led me To my blessed Saviour's seat."
